COMPOSERS' LAB

Do you sometimes feel that simply playing the music of others is no longer enough? That you would like to develop your own musical ideas, create original music, and discover what your own musical voice sounds like?

Or, to say the big word that so many people find intimidating: you want to compose.

Perhaps you are just beginning and wondering how anyone actually starts writing their own music. Or maybe you have already written a few pieces and would like to deepen your musical expression, explore new directions, or learn how to develop your ideas more consciously.

Many classically trained musicians spend years learning how to interpret music. Yet they are rarely taught how to create their own.

The Composers’ Lab is designed for instrumentalists who want to move from interpretation to creation. For musicians who want to discover their own musical voice and use their instrument not only to play music, but to create it.

Whether you are writing your first piece or already have experience composing, the focus is on helping you develop your own ideas, deepen your creative practice, and bring your music to life.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE COMPOSERS’ LAB?

The Composers’ Lab is a creative space for musicians who want to develop their own musical ideas and bring them to life.

Together, we explore how musical ideas emerge, how they can be developed, and how they gradually take shape as original compositions. The process combines inspiration with practical compositional tools and a hands-on approach that begins directly at the instrument.

We explore questions such as:

• How do you find ideas when inspiration seems absent?

• How can a simple melody grow into a complete piece?

• How do you move beyond familiar patterns and discover new possibilities?

• How can melodies be harmonized and expanded?

• How does musical form emerge from a collection of ideas?

Most importantly, we explore how to develop a sustainable creative practice — one that allows you to continue growing as a composer long after the first piece is finished.

The Composers’ Lab is part studio, part workshop, and part creative community. I provide guidance, tools, feedback, and inspiration. You bring your ideas, curiosity, musical experience, and willingness to explore.

The goal is not simply to finish pieces, but to deepen your creative process, strengthen your musical voice, and experience how an idea can grow into music that is shared, performed, and brought to life.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

I just watched the video of the beautiful music we composed together today. I’m deeply moved by how much we created in such a short time. Thank you, dear Beatrix, for your wonderful encouragement and inspiration!

Thank you so much for inviting me to the composition workshop! You helped me reconnect with music and with the sense of magic and creative energy it brings into my life. I’m deeply grateful.

HI, I AM BEATRIX

I did not learn composition sitting at a desk. I learned it by making music.

After studying clarinet and piano, I knew the traditional path of learning music through scores and interpretation. But at some point I realized that the music I wanted to play did not yet exist. So I started creating it myself.

What began with a few musical ideas gradually grew into a body of original work: international performances, albums, published compositions, and collaborations with renowned artists, including a commissioned work for Giora Feidman.

Along the way, I deepened my craft through composition lessons, jazz harmony, improvisation, and years of creative exploration. But the starting point was never, “Now I know enough, so I can begin.”

It was exactly the opposite.

I began, and I grew through the process.

That experience continues to shape the way I teach today. I believe that creativity does not begin when everything is in place. It begins when we are willing to take the first step, work with what we have, and trust the process.

One of the most rewarding moments for me is seeing a musical idea come to life — and even more so when that music is shared, performed, and brought into the world by other musicians.

That is the experience I hope to share with others through the Composers’ Lab.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS ARE SAYING

For a long time, it was my dream to bring more music back into my life. As a mother with a full-time job, my creativity had to take a back seat for many years.

Beatrix inspired me to reconnect with music and to take my dreams and talents seriously again. To make space for them in my life.

Suddenly, old dreams began to resurface. But instead of making me feel sad or guilty, they became a source of inspiration. For the first time in a long while, I could see a path forward.

I also met like-minded people in Beatrix’s courses. Some are professionals, some are amateurs, but all of us are looking for ways to live our musical dreams alongside family life, demanding jobs, or careers in music education. It is incredibly encouraging to realize that you are not alone.

Without the last two courses, I would never have taken this step. And not only that — I am actually working on my biggest dream: writing a musical.

That realization has brought me an enormous sense of relief. Because for the first time, I am proving to myself that I can do it — and that there is room for it in my life.”
